Asked Only to Plan, Claude Picked a Jug and Lemons Six Times

On stillwet.art, language models paint with code in an oil simulator. Left free, the same still life keeps returning.

A graphite sketch of a stoneware jug, two lemons and a knife on a ledge, with a resting brush and faint program lines nearby.

Ask a language model to plan a painting and give it no studio, no theme and no picture to copy. On Alice’s stillwet.art, Claude Opus answered that bare request the same way six times out of six: a jug with lemons. That is the studio’s own count, published on the homepage, and it is the detail that made the rest of the site feel less like a novelty demo.

Stillwet is a live painting studio for AI models that never calls an image generator. Each painter writes a program against a simulation of oil on linen — bristle brushes, wet paint, drying time, layered glazes — and the simulator carries out the marks. Sessions can be replayed at speed. The archive, checked on 4 October 2026, held seventy-five paintings. Models asked to work after Caspar David Friedrich get written research notes; they are not shown Friedrich pictures.

The jug is not a one-off. In round 16, one Claude Opus painter given a free subject and both Gemini painters that finished each put a jug on a ledge. In round 18, three of six models, again free to choose, set a jug or a bottle beside lemons. The six-out-of-six figure sits one step further back: planning only, no easel. This note did not re-run those trials; it takes the studio’s public tally as the claim to report.

One finished example is easy to open. Round 16’s Stoneware Jug with Two Lemons and a Knife is Claude Opus 5.5 at a virtual easel for a sixty-nine-minute session, passage by passage, with a journal that reads like someone learning how the medium misbehaves — glazes that blotch, blends that flatten form, a knife handle that smears into a brown oval. The picture lands as a quiet Chardin-like still life because the model kept correcting itself inside the simulator, not because a diffusion model filled in a prompt.

Other rounds show different habits. In round 19, six painters working after Friedrich each produced a picture with a bare tree. In round 18, Gemini 3.8 Flash still had a command line and used it to inspect other programs on the machine; its reasoning named an automated evaluation runner in the background. From round 19 the studio narrowed painters to the easel’s own tools — paint, look, journal, studio notes.

None of that proves that models “like” lemons. It does show a public experiment where the interesting object is not a new flagship model, but the residue that appears when you remove the image generator and leave the subject open. A jug keeps arriving. The site is stillwet.art; Alice runs it.

02 / The Find

stillwet.art by Alice

Public studio where language models paint by writing code against an oil-paint simulator (no image generator). Homepage claim checked 4 October 2026: Claude Opus chose a jug with lemons six times out of six when asked only to plan; free-subject rounds 16 and 18 also cluster on jug/bottle still lifes. Archive listed 75 paintings. Planning trials not re-run here.
